Origin and Dispersion

Native to Persia, it was domesticated in Iran around 2,000 years before Christ. In the Mediterranean, it has long been a fruit of some interest. Hence it was distributed to other countries in Asia to the Americas. Another species is known, but without edible fruits.

Climate and Soil

It is a plant that adapts to tropical and subtropical climates, even in the semi-arid.

Propagation

It is propagated by seeds, but, as it has cross-pollination, it can give different types. Vegetative propagation by woody cuttings is easy, as well as by layering.

Varieties

There are many improved cultivars.

Use

The fruit can be consumed naturally, such as juices and jellies or in a wine called “grenadine”. There is a syrup made from the juice. As the bark contains 30% tannin, it can be used to tan leather. It has therapeutic properties and is used in folk medicine.

Pomegranate juice contains water, sugars such as glucose and fructose, organic acids, proteins, minerals and vitamins in small amounts and makes up to 45 to 65% of the fruit's weight.

A beneficial attribute of pomegranate juice is its antioxidant effect, due to the phenolic compounds and polyphenols and tannins in its sugars, with medicinal effects.

The acidity ranges from 0.5 to 3%, and the total soluble solids range from 10 to 14º Brix.

Vitamins - It has 8 to 14 mg of vitamin C / 100 g; carotene - 0.03-0.09 mg; B1 - 0.01-0.7 mg; B3 - 0.3-0.9 mg.

Minerals - Calcium - 3-14 mg; phosphorus - 8-70 mg; iron - 0.3-1.0 mg; sodium - 4-7 mg; potassium - 133-379 mg.

Various pigments give color to the fruit, with a small percentage of tannin that gives it its bitter taste.

The seeds contain up to 15% of oil, of good value, and saturated fats are, on average, 8%, monounsaturated 10% and acids, with up to 7%.

Switzerland published in July 2016 in the specialized journal Nature Medicine. The study was carried out in 2 animal species, nematoids and rodents, and yet to be confirmed in humans).

- Prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension (complementary measure that requires clinical studies to demonstrate its use for this indication).

- Prevention of certain cancers (in this case new clinical studies are also needed), as in the case of breast cancer, prostate cancer or colon cancer

- Arthritis

- It can have a positive effect on sexual activity.

Currently, this syrup is produced by synthetic products without pomegranates. - In the Bible, pomegranates are mentioned several times, especially in the Old Testament, in Canticles (Canticles Chap. 4 Ver. 3), where we read: “And their faces are like the halves of the pomegranate under the veil ”. Proof that the Jews valued this plant for thousands of years. Pomegranate is also mentioned in Islamic art. The ancient Egyptians were also very fond of this fruit, whether in art or mythology.
