Pau d'arco bark is a tree that grows in the Amazon rainforest and other tropical regions of South and Central America.

With dense, rot-resistant wood, some South American natives use the plant to produce hunting bows.

1. Inflammation
According to nutrition expert Cathy Wong, a 2008 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that a water-based pau d’arco extract inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory substances (prostaglandins).

“Prostaglandins are produced in areas of infection or tissue damage, causing inflammation, pain and fever as part of the healing process,” explained the nutrition expert.

However, Wong highlighted that only a few studies have investigated the use of pau d’arco, meaning that it is not possible to say that the plant is useful, efficient or even safe for treating inflammatory conditions.

2. Infections
There is a hypothesis that the antimicrobial properties of pau d’arco bark could be beneficial to humans in the prevention or treatment of bacterial, viral or fungal infections.

According to Wong, 2013 research from Brazil indicated that lapachol could neutralize disease-causing bacteria inside the test tube.

Additionally, similar studies have shown that it may have the same effect on viruses associated with the common cold, flu and cold sore.

Wong also mentioned initial research that appeared in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology and indicated pau d’arco as the plant with the greatest action against fungi and yeasts among the 14 Paraguayan plants commonly used in traditional medicine.

However, further investigation is needed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of pau d’arco in a real-world scenario.
