Cat's claw: What is it for and what are the benefits of this medicinal plant?

Cat's Claw is a medicinal plant that has immunostimulating properties. Therefore, it is widely used to boost immunity, assisting in treatments for people with metastatic tumors, arthrosis, candidiasis, herpes zoster, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

The plant is called that in Brazil, because its thorns are in the form of claws. It may be of the species Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.)

They are perennial vines that are distinguished by the shape of their thorns, the characteristics of their leaves and the color of their flowers. The species U. tomentosa is a giant woody vine, usually found in primary or already logged forests. It can reach up to 35 meters in length and 5 to 40 centimeters in diameter at the base. It has semi-curved, pointed spines with a woody consistency. Its distribution is wide in the Amazon and Central America. In Brazil, this species occurs in the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas and Pará.

The Indians consumed Cat's Claw, mainly, in the form of tea made from the bark of the stem or roots for degenerative and inflammatory processes, gastric ulcers and other dysfunctions. Women used the decoction of the roots as a contraceptive.

Cat's claw: what is it indicated for?

According to studies published in 2009, Cat's Claw can be used against dengue symptoms. In addition, it is already used in the production of anti-inflammatories and has beneficial effects in the treatment of rheumatic and muscular diseases, mainly in the elderly. The plant also has action in the treatment of other diseases such as:

- Rhinitis;

The plant has antimicrobial properties and acts as a cell protector and antioxidant. As for the brain, it has memory-stimulating action, helping to prevent Alzheimer's.
